Interventions for the Family
Families, especially those experiencing a family member's incarceration for the first time, need information and support.
The spouse needs to understand how the criminal justice system works.
Someone should assist the spouse in obtaining information about bail, and trial procedures (as appropriate).
Following sentencing, the spouse will need information about the policies and procedures of the corrections facility where the offending partner will reside. Families should be aware that inmates can be transferred from one facility to another and that different facilities have different rules.
Children of incarcerated parents often lose contact with their imprisoned parents, and they experience a wide range of emotions that include fear, anxiety, abandonment, shame, loneliness, and guilt.
Children who are taunted by their peers may not request help from school personnel due to the stigma attached to having a parent in jail. Research shows that children whose parents exhibit criminal behaviors are at increased risk for poor school performance, dropping out, early pregnancy, substance abuse, and delinquency.
In raw numbers, there are more than 73,000 minor children with a parent in prison, at least 826,000 under eighteen years old with a parent in prison, and around 327,000 below age fifteen with a parent in jail.
This translates possibly into upwards of 1.5 million minor children with a parent behind bars. Of course, these figures do not take into account the innumerable children who have had an incarcerated parent at some earlier point in their young lives.
This all causes a severe trauma to the Spouse that is left behind to pick up the pieces, the spouse is the innocent partner, but has to be punnished just as severely as the prisoner.
,,Freedom,, was set up to help anyone caught up in this unfair situation, and give them Freedom of mind to rebuild a fairly normal life once more.
Thousands of families have already had to go through the above injustices, you can either get help from others who have gone through it all,,or ask help if you are suffering the indignations of having a partner incacerated.
